What is GDPR and why you cannot ignore it?

If you are running a Joomla site which main customers are from Europe, you should have aware of GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation). This regulation introduction is to protect data as well as EU citizens individual privacy. It is really important for you to get to know about this rule, that is the reason why we write this blog post for giving you a clearer look of GDPR. Besides, we also have some recommendations for getting your site compliant with GDPR.

What is GDPR and why it is important?

On April 27th, 2016, GDPR (known as the name General Data Protection Regulation) was adopted for the first time and it will be officially enforceable on May 25, 2018. As an online user, you should be familiar with granting permissions for organizations and companies to use your personal data like a “give and take” for a free service, which may bring you many risks that your personal data can be used for bad purposes. That is the reason why GDPR appear, to give EU citizens rights to control how their data will be used by companies or organizations. There are also heavy fines which have been listed on this regulation for any individual/organizations who violate this rule as well as suffering data breaches.

GDPR protects private data of all EU citizens even when their data are used from outside Europe, so any company and organization from anywhere outside EU will be involved with this regulation if they have main customers from Europe or database of EU citizens. It is no more than a month from now to the enforceable day of the regulation, you should be quick to get your site ready for this rule if you don’t want to be fined heavily for violating it.

Before GDPR, EU Cookie Law (EU Directive 2009/136/EC) is also known as a regulation of Europe to protect EU citizens individual privacy and personal data. This regulation is enforceable to all Europe member states and all websites which have the main market in Europe. When surfing websites, you must be familiar with the pop-up “Our website uses cookies to improve your experience” or similar to let us be aware of it without offering another option. With the introduction of GDPR, we can be informed and offered a real option. We can recognize that GDPR is stricter and tighter than the EU Cookie Law. Just an example, when users must confirm that their data can be collected, there will be a specific privacy policy showing what data is going to be used and stored, and users can withdraw the agreement of using their personal data if they require.

We have collected some necessary extensions to help you get ready for the enforceable day of GDPR and also EU Cookie Law. Come and give it a look!
